Now let’s start to talk about 4 easy steps to find a profitable niche fast.
Table of Contents
1. Look at Your Problems and Your Hobbies
The clients that you want to target are humans like you, and all people have some problems that they want to fix or some hobby that they want to enjoy.
Finding niches that suit your problems and hobbies is a great way to find things that people are already looking for.
First, start making a list with all the problems you have or had and you wanted a fix on. It could be wanting to make more money, wanting to lose weight, wanting to find the best airplane ticket deals and so on.
Try to imagine yourself looking for a solution for that problem, and think about what keywords you would use when searching.
There are a lot of people that have the same problems you have and they are looking for solutions online, so that’s a great way to start.
Another list that you want to make is with your hobbies. Things that you enjoy doing and it makes you happy. It could be anything from playing poker online to going hiking.
After you have these two lists of problems and hobbies, circle around things that you would really enjoy writing about. This is one of the secrets that few marketers talk about.
You’re going to spend a lot of time writing, building and researching your niche website, and doing it on something that is fun for you’ll make you much more successful at it.
So, your third list should be about the things that solve your problems or satisfy your hobbies and you’ll love to write about. Try to pick more than 5 things on it.
This is the list that you’ll use to start finding your niche.
2. Keyword Research
Nothing beats the good old-fashioned keyword research that you can do with the free tool that Google provides, Keyword Planner.
You want to find lots of keywords around your selected topic that will have between 1K to 10K monthly searches.
Finding a niche with at least 5 of these keywords is ideal. You can get up to 10 keywords per niche, but 5 are minimal.
What this information will tell is that your niche is something people are looking for. If you don’t find at least 5 keywords with 1K-10K monthly searches, it means that the niche is too small.
We’re not going for something too big, but too small is not good either.
When you’re looking for keyword ideas, make sure you select “Show closely related ideas” instead of “Broadly related ideas”, otherwise you’re going to get keywords that are way too broad and big.
3. Examine Trends in the Marketplace
Another great way to make sure that your niche is profitable or to find more ideas about niches is to use the marketplace as a research zone.
We’ll use some of the biggest platforms in the marketplace to research the trends and what products are hot recently. This information will serve us well in choosing the most profitable niche possible.
Amazon.com
Amazon is a great place to start doing marketplace research. This giant online retailer sells everything you can think of and is a great place to find red hot niches.
You can choose a category to search from and hit the “Go” button without writing anything. After that, you’ll get even more niches and sub-niches of that category on the left panel.
Keep exploring your niche and find sub-niches that look interesting for you.
Also, check the Best Selling category to see that is trending right now. It’s impossible to not find something good for you.
A tip would be to check the products that are hot on the sub-niches you are choosing. If you find a lot of products that have thousands of reviews, that means there is a lot of buying potential for that sub-niche.
This research is great especially if you’re promoting physical products to make money with your niche site.
Flippa.com
Flippa is one of the biggest marketplaces to sell websites that are profitable. You can check the list of recently sold website to see for how much money they sell and how much profit/month they are making.
Use the search function to find listings from your niche to see how many websites are selling there and how much profit they are generating.
If you see a lot of websites that generate good profits that means there is a lot of earning potential in that niche.
You can also get ideas about monetization this way, as in details they explain how they are generating those profits.
So you don't only get a lot of great ideas of niche sites and sub-niches that perform well, but you’ll also get ideas on what works to monetize them. Win-win!
Clickbank.com
Clickbank is the number 1 digital marketplace online. You can use the information you find on their marketplace to get ideas about niches and products that sell well.
If you find at least a couple of products that have more than 30 gravity on your sub-niche, that means there is the potential of earning lots of money in that niche.
Products that don’t sell don’t last too long in there anyway, and gravity easily tells you if they got any sales recently or not.
A product with 30 gravity or lower doesn’t generate enough profit to be worth-while.
You might also get ideas about some products and interests in your niche that you weren’t aware of, by checking the most popular products for your category.
Google Trends
Google Trends is a great free tool to check trends that were popular last week, month or year.
You can also use this tool to compare different niches that you are interested in and see which one has a higher potential to bring home the bacon.
I always compare the keywords I find inside Google Trends to see which one has the most ranking potential.
Search for Forums
Another great idea is to find forums that are related to your niche. You can easily search in Google “your keywords + forum” to get a nice list of forums in your category.
Check out at least 5 of them, and see how popular they are in terms of members and posts per day.
If you find a lot of popular forums in your niche, that means there are a lot of people that are looking to find more information about that category, which makes it profitable.
People don’t sign on forums if they are not really interested in that subject.
Use Google Suggest
When you type something in Google, the search engine will be quick to show you some popular inquiries that people have used with those keywords.
This is a great way to find things people are looking for, and even very profitable sub-niches. It’s a simple yet effective way to get instant results on the keywords targeted.
Don’t underestimate the power of this free tool. You’ll be surprised to find out what people are searching in Google when it comes to your niche.
And since your niche site will target the keywords that will bring people interested in what you have to offer, Google suggest is a sure way to find profitable keywords.
Search on Quora
Quora is that place where people go to get answers to questions, and it’s a great place to see how popular certain topics are.
If your niche is hot, you can be sure that you’ll find a lot of questions posted on Quora by people that want to know more about it.
If you can’t find too many questions about it, it means the niche is not popular enough and you need to make it a bit broader.
Simply put your keywords in the search bar and see what results pop up.
4. Look for Low Authority Sites on That Niche
After you got through all the steps and you chose your niche, there’s one more step that you need to do to make sure that this is a success for you.
You need to look for other niche sites that are focused around your keywords. The idea is that you won’t find anything new, so you would better focus on things that are already working.
Search in Google your keywords and see what kind of websites you find. You can use the free toolbar from Moz.com to see exactly what DA the results have, right there in the search.
If there are other niche sites for your keywords that means you have a shot at defeating the competition. If the first page is filled only with huge brands and authority sites, that means you have a much harder time getting the juice.
If you don’t find any niche sites for your keywords, the next best step is to niche down even further. There is a possibility that there aren’t people who thought about that specific idea, but the chances are very slim.
When you find your competition, make sure you start to study the top 3 of them. See what keywords they use, what content they have, what design they have, and make sure that your niche site will be even better.
There will be times when you’ll have the ability to determine if a niche is profitable without studying your competition, but that will take years of mastery and experience.
This is the easiest way to find a profitable niche: by following someone else’s footsteps. Of course, you’ll do it even better, which in turn will give your niche site a big advantage.
Conclusion
Finding a profitable niche is one of the most important steps of building a niche site in the first place. If you apply the steps I mentioned in this article, you can be sure that you’ll find great niches that are profitable and not too big.
The tools we used are free, so we need nothing special to access this kind of information. All we need is the determination to put out the work and make it happen.
Choosing the proper niche is something that will be worth it. It’s the foundation for the entire niche site.
